What do you do around here? How do you influence Disproportionate Mindshare?
What I do is apply a level of focus on a client’s brand that they can’t do themselves, and through that focus help them evolve their message to suit their business goals. What drives me is opportunity: I feel that so many brands and products do not make a connection with the heart or mind, but only seek a transaction. I think brands can go deeper. The few that do will find competitive advantages that build real value for their company and purpose for their employees. My role is to foster that change through work that is relevant, fresh and, often, rewards with humor or surprise.
What is your passion?
My passion in life is to really just have a good time and make connections with people. That’s why I like food and travel. And that’s why I like the business of design and marketing. Our purpose is to make strong connections between a brand and various audiences. And how you do that, in my experience, is to forge strong connections between leaders and employees, the client and agency, and across agency teams. So I love the human interactivity that this business promises. Without that interaction or the resulting connections, our lives—and work output—would be boring and ignorable.
What about your experiences make you uniquely qualified?
I’ve always been an observer. The kid on the sidelines, the person in the audience, the art director behind the camera. This has fed my brain with all sorts of cultural knick-knacks that are quite possibly only useful in advertising. Life’s trivialities and ephemeral nature are, in my mind, the essence of humanity and worth paying attention to. So, I embrace the role of observer as opposed to the observed because it gives me a deeper awareness about people and greater empathy.
What one thing outside of work do you do, that reflects your spirit?
I love travel, especially to new towns and cities to soak up different environments and subsets of culture. Food is a huge part of this experience. This, more than anything, feeds a need in me for awareness. For the same reason, I enjoy a wide variety of film and music. Apart from lots of family time, I like playing guitar, tinkering with my old car or getting outdoors.
